1 Day Passport, Same Day Passport Appointment

If you need your passport urgently due to travelling within the next 4 weeks or if you need proof of identity for a new job or another purpose as soon as possible, you can book a 1 day passport service. In order to do this you will need to pay for the extra service and you can only use this service if you meet certain requirements.

Can I get a passport the same day?

You can get a passport in 1 day, however please note that you must pre-book this service in advance, you must then attend a local passport office in person, and must also meet the following criteria:

  • You must be an adult over the age of 15 to get a passport the same day.

  • You must have a current passport that is not lost, stolen, or damaged.

  • You must be willing to pay the additional fees associated with the expedited service.

  • You must be in one of the 8 Regional Passport Offices in the UK to use this service.

Please note that children (individuals under the age of 16 years) are not able to use the 1 day passport service, this is due to child abduction rules. In some extreme circumstances this rule can be broken, such as for urgent medical care or if a close relative or friend is gravely ill or has passed away, however in order to check this you will need to contact the hm passport office to discuss.

How long does it take to get a new passport?

The appointment itself lasts approx. 30 minutes

If you attend a pre-booked appointment at a local HM Passport Office and your passport application form and all supporting documents are in order, you will be able to receive your new passport within 4 hours. Once you have attended the appointment you will be given a receipt (keep this safe) as you will need to use it and return after 4 hours in order to pick up the passport.

Can someone attend on my behalf?

Yes, a friend, family member or work colleague can attend your appointment for you (or simply pickup the passport after the 4 hour period). However there is a list of strict requirements when doing so, please see further guidance for attending passport appointments

What documents are required?

  • Obtain a passport form from your local Post Office

  • Provide two identical (passport sized) photographs

  • Bring your current/expired passport with you to the appointment

  • Take the passport renewal form, you may also need to get the form and one of the photos countersigned, find out if you need a counter-signatory and who can countersign a passport

  • If your passport is damaged (beyond reasonable wear and tear) you may not be able to use the 1 day service, check if your passport is damaged.

If you would like more detail on the documents required see when attending urgent appointments.

How do I book a passport service?

In order to book an urgent passport service you will need to find your nearest passport office from the list below:

Or if you are unsure you can find your nearest passport office with your postcode.

How much does it cost?

This service comes with a fee and the following amounts stated below (which must be paid by phone at the time of booking the appointment):

  • £193.50 for an adult 32-page passport

  • £204.50 for an adult 50-page frequent traveller passport

What payment methods are accepted?

The HM Passport Office accepts payment via all major Credit & Debit Cards when booking an appointment by phone, unfortunately American Express is not an accepted form of payment.

How far in advance can I book a same day appointment?

You can book an appointment up to 2 weeks in advance, please note however that some passport offices can be busier than others at certain times, so you may only be able to book one or two days ahead in some circumstances.

If your local passport office does not have availability, ask the operator on the HM Passport Office booking line to check the next nearest office to your location. This may then require you to travel further to attend, however this could allow you to attend a sooner appointment date, this is a good tip if you need your passport as quickly as possible and are flexible about travel to a local passport office.

What happens if I need to change or cancel the appointment?

What happens when you need to make changes or cancel a passport appointment at the HM Passport Office?

Changes to existing appointment date or time

It is important to note that there is a deadline in place for changes to existing appointment bookings. If you need to make any changes to your booking, then you have up to two full working days before your appointment date in order to do so. This means that you must inform the Passport Office of any changes to your application before noon two days prior to your appointment date, they will not be able to make any changes within this time as the booking system does not allow the operators to override this rule.

Cancel an appointment

If you need to cancel your passport appointment, you can do so by calling the passport adviceline, you can do this at any time however you will not receive a refund of the fee paid. If you later decide to re-book you will need to re-pay the fee(s) stated above again in full.
